Today,Secretive Boarding House the late, great Debbie Reynolds is best remembered for her sunny appearances in films like Singing in the Rain, but she also played an unwilling role in one of classic Hollywood's most famous scandals.
The love triangle between herself, her husband Eddie Fisher and the actress Elizabeth Taylor more than rivalled the machinations of Brad, Jennifer and Angelina -- a comparison the star herself once made.
Reynolds died at age 84 in Los Angeles Wednesday, just one day after her daughter Carrie Fisher passed away from a heart attack.
SEE ALSO: This old Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds 'Oprah' interview will break your heartFisher, a television singer, was the first of Reynolds's three husbands, and the father of her two children, Todd and Carrie. Their marriage became the stuff of Hollywood legend after Fisher left the actress for her friend, Elizabeth Taylor, whom he married in 1959.
As two young stars, Reynolds had grown up with Taylor on the MGM studio lot, and she and Fisher were close with the Taylor and her third husband, Mike Todd.
Taylor and Fisher began their entanglement after Todd, who Taylor later called the "love of her life," died in a plane accident. The affair was calamitous for Taylor, to whom America apportioned much of the blame.
The aftermath of the scandal is retold by Karina Longworth in her Hollywood history podcast, You Must Remember This.
The gossip columnist Hedda Hopper famously called Taylor to ask about the rumours of a dalliance with Fisher, and she did not hold back. "You can't break up a happy marriage. Debbie and Eddie's never has been," Taylor reportedly said. "What do you expect me to do? Sleep alone?"
After the interview, according to Longworth, the often puritanical Hopper declared it was "open season" on Taylor.
While Liz remained in hiding at her agent's house, subsisting on takeout chilli from Chasen's, Debbie played her part in daily photo shoots designed to show that, unlike the bad girl, the good girl was not afraid to show her face. Columnists like Hopper were inundated with letters, many of which they printed, expressing sympathy for Debbie and disparaging Liz as a tramp, a hussy, a home wrecker.
Things did not go well for Fisher either. Chesterfield cigarettes, the sponsor of his TV show, "was boycotted by irate moralists" and angry letters poured into NBC. His career never fully recovered.
Later, Reynolds was able to look back on the incident with humour and at times, brutal honesty.
She and Taylor later reconciled on a cruise ship (of course) as she explained to Oprah in a 2011 interview.
"I don't blame Elizabeth now, now that I have more of a brain about it. At the time, it was just such a shock to me," she said.
Though, she did have this to say about Fisher's sexual prowess.
"I stood no chance against her," she told The Sunin 2013.
"I was just like Jennifer Aniston with Brad Pitt when he fell in love with Angelina Jolie. If Angelina wants someone, then that is that. Certain women have that power. What chance did I have against Elizabeth, a woman of great womanly experience, when I had no experience at all?"
It was a classic Hollywood fracas, but Reynolds had the last laugh.
"When I was 18 I knew nothing about anything. I worked with all the big stars like Clark Gable and Fred Astaire without dating any of them," she said.
"I have had a wonderful career but such very bad luck with men."
