Women were pushed by anti-riot police tossing tear gas in Istanbul. Along Turkey's border984 Archives asylum seekers made signs out of beat-up cardboard. In Kyrgyzstan, police detained women after masked men attacked them and destroyed their signs.
The demonstrators who gathered on International Women's Day on Sunday in multiple countries want equal rights. They want equal pay. They want justice for sexual violence. They want to loosen abortion controls. They are loud. They are mad. They want to be heard.
Their numbers ranged from handfuls to a few hundred to hundreds of thousands. Some chants were chilling. "They kill us, they rape us and nobody does anything," bellowed women in Chile, according to the Associated Press. Women plan to strike on Monday in Mexico to continue the demonstration.
