Back in 2015,Watch The Pussycat Ranch (1978) Google unveiled Project Fi to the world. There was a lot of skepticism targeted at the tech giant's first foray into being a wireless carrier (technically an MVNO) at the time. Flash forward to 2018 and the formerly invite-only service is open to all and offers a plan that's both competitive and unique.
One consistent complaint about Fi is there aren't many devices compatible with its SIM cards, but the service is changing that mindset today, adding three new devices to its lineup.
SEE ALSO: You know you're getting old when you remember using these phonesFirst up is the Moto G6, available for pre-order today for $199 ($50 cheaper than the regular price of $249). It features a 5.7-inch Full HD+ edge-to-edge display, a 3,000mAh battery, a 1.8GHz octa-core processor, an 8-megapixel front camera, and a dual-lens camera (12-megapixel and 5-megapixel) on the back.
The other two devices are from LG. The flagship LG G7 ThinQ will be arriving next month at $749. For the price, you get a 6.1-inch edge-to-edge QHD+ display, a 2.8GHz Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage with a microSD card slot, a 3,000mAh battery, an 8-megapixel front camera, and dual 16-megapixel lenses on the back.
Last but not least is the new LG V35 ThinQ that lands next month for $899. And yes, it's similar to the relatively new LG V30S that launched earlier this year. It packs an OLED display with a hefty 6GB of RAM. Like the LG G7, it'll feature 64GB of internal storage and have a microSD card slot for expansion.
If you pre-order either the LG G7 or LG V35 next month, you will be eligible for a $50 Project Fi service credit. The Moto G6 gets the $50 discount off the price mentioned above, and it's available for pre-order now.
Before today, Project Fi directly sold three phones: the Google Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, and an Android One variant of the Moto X4. Customers have the option of either buying one when they signed up for Project Fi or bringing their own unlocked versions. An unlocked first-gen Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, or Nexus 5X will work on the network as well.
Project Fi can definitely be a bargain for many: $20 a month you get unlimited domestic calls and texts, and then it's just $10 per GB of data. The service's big selling point is Bill Protection, which means you don't pay for data you don't use -- very uncommon with other pre-paid plans.
Like Boost Mobile or Virgin Mobile, Project Fi is an MVNO or a "mobile virtual network operator." In that, they are sharing T-Mobile's, Sprint's, and U.S. Cellular's network. The combination of a cellular network (which is 4G LTE in most part of the U.S.) with Wi-Fi often results in better coverage.
