The DubbedLos Angeles Rams fired head coach Jeff Fisher on Monday, a day after their ninth loss of the season.
The Rams struggled after their return to Los Angeles, where they played from 1946-1994 before shipping off to St. Louis. Going 4-9 and firing the head coach mid-season probably isn't what Los Angeles football fans were hoping for when the team moved back.
It's particularly bizarre, considering Fisher signed a contract extension last week.
But get this — Sunday's loss to the Falcons marked the 165th of Fisher's coaching career, tying him for the most career losses by an NFL coach. So firing him makes a lot of sense.
"He has worked tireless despite some challenging circumstances," the Rams said in a statement. "He played an integral role in helping this team make history in returning the NFL to Los Angeles, and we always will be grateful for his commitment and dedication to our organization."
Despite the 165 losses, fans are pointing to another win-loss statistic.
HBO's Hard Knocksdocumented the Rams' training camp this summer and captured Fisher telling his team that he wouldn't settle for a 7-9 record.
It quickly became a running gag among football fans.
Well, Fisher's last loss with the Rams put them at 4-9 on the season with — you guessed it — three games left. So naturally, fans jumped on the opportunity to bring up the 7-9 speech.
I want the interim coach to say that he's "going to finish what Jeff Fisher started and finish the season 7-9."

Expect the search for Jeff Fisher’s replacement to take 7-9 weeks.

In my mind, Fisher would have won his final 3 games

7-9 forever, baby
@sportspickle Jeff Fisher was informed of the decision earlier today, some time between 7-9.

Fisher was right. He won't be going 7-9, because he doesn't have a job anymore.
But that doesn't mean the Rams won't.
